“The idea was to reveal myself – without any obstructions, both outside and in.”

In March 2024, Northern Irish artist and illustrator Davidt Dunlop‘s heart stopped for the first time. Within the space of a month, he suffered two cardiac arrests outside hospital. ‘Recovery was slow and it put all my work on hold,’ he says. ‘I had to rehab and therapy myself back into drawing again.’

A little over a year later, Heartbroken represents his creative return…

Description

Inspired by a piece Davidt created when he was 17, Heartbroken reveals his inner workings – both physical and emotional – including snippets of spoken memories from times when his heart had been broken in the past.

Davidt’s work frequently revolves around outsiders: being alienated or trying to fit in. He is the creator of Baphometta and Poor Little Ghosts. He thinks of himself as a sculptor, creating his publications as art objects. He likes to draw monsters, cats and ghosts.
