Jozefa’s Bread by Yolanta Gawlik (Colossive Cartographies 43)

£2.00

The idea came to me while I was working on my long-term project, a graphic novel titled ‘Henryk’s Escape’. It’s the story of my father, who escaped from a German labour camp when he was 16, and spent more than seven weeks walking home in central Poland. One of the things that helped him survive was the thought of his mother, Jozefa, cooking and baking. I imagined him recalling how food was made at home, and the story of Jozefa’s bread-making was born.

Yolanta Gawlik is an artist and storyteller based in Cornwall and London SE20.
