Women’s Work by Julian Payne (Colossive Cartographies 61)

£2.00

Who nurtured the roots and grasses as you waved your bloodied spear?

When humans moved from hunting and gathering to farming, it did not happen quickly. Archaeologists liken it to a 10,000-year experiment happening in multiple geographies and different times.

In previous (even recent) narratives of this process, women have been all but erased. However, evidence now suggests they played a central role in the domestication of plants, the evolution of textiles, pottery and more. If this idea tickles your curiosity, you can start by reading The Dawn of Everything, a big archaeology book, which inspired this little comic.

Julian Payne writes and draws his own comics. He likes drawing with pencil, inks and wotnot before colouring and lettering digitally. His comics often co-written with his wife Zoë Elkins, explore themes of folk horror, prehistory and landscape.

A4, full colour, folded to A6. Also available as part of the six-issue Series Eleven set.

Colossive Cartographies use a simple pop-out format based on the Turkish map fold. We’re collaborating with creators including cartoonists, fine artists, poets, writers and photographers to bring an unpredictable range of visual practice into a hand-folded treat.
